Young Dalit and Adivasi Christians in Trichy Tanjore Diocese Upped the Ante Against Caste- Based Discrimination

“The achievements of Dr K. R. Narayanan, the former President of India, are greater than any of his contemporary politicians and diplomats because he earned them fighting against all the odds, especially with the people who have the cultural capital, which Dr Narayanan did not have. While many point to some other Presidents of India as role models for youth, I would suggest you to proudly follow Dr Narayanan as your role model”, exhorted Rt. Rev. Chandrasekaran, the Bishop in Trichy Tanjore Diocese of the Church of South India (CSI)  while he addressed the gathering of Dalit and Adivasi youngsters. The two- day leadership training camp was jointly organised by the Dalit and Adivasi Concerns Departments of the Synod and the Trichy- Tanjore Diocese of CSI at the Bishop’s College of Nursing in Dharapuram near Tirupur in Tamilnadu.

The workshop got underway with the inaugural worship in which Rev. S. Sudharsan; Clerical Secretary of CSI Trichy- Tanjore Diocese, delivered the sermon.

Rev. Sunil Raj Philip; the Director of the CSI Synod Dalit & Adivasi Concerns Dept. gave the introduction to the Training Camp. He told to the participants of the worship service that they should be extracting energy and vision from the pathos of the Dalits and Adivasis and prepare themselves to defeat the caste-based discrimination they are forced to face in every walk of life.

Mr D. Ravikumar; Lay Secretary of CSI Trichy- Tanjore Diocese, Mr S. Rajendran; Diocesan Treasurer, Trichy- Tanjore Diocese, Rev. Paul Rathinam; DCC Chairman CSI Dharapuram, and Rev. John Prabhu; Dalit Adivasi Dept Convene of the CSI Trichy- Tanjore Diocese delivered felicitation speeches in the inaugural function. The leaders of camp lighted the earthen lamps fixed on a model of a ‘Parai’, the Dalit drum, as the mark of the formal beginning of the camp.

Mr Jacob Swaminathan; Human Resource Trainer, The Skill Factory, Bangalore, led the training sessions under the title “A personality development training from Dalit Tribal perspective”.

The evening of the day was rich with the dances and songs of Dalits and Adivasis. This cultural festival was inaugurated by the Trichy Bishop. Groups from different parts of the Diocese performed on the stage.

The Second day of the Workshop began with the Sunday worship at CSI Ellis Memorial Church in Dharapuram. In this musical worship, pastors of the Dharapuram area of the Trichy- Tanjore Diocese led the singing and Rev. Sunil Raj Philip delivered the sermon on ‘Revelation of God in Worship’.

Rev. Sunil led the final session of the workshop and encouraged the youngsters to prepare themselves to face the caste- based discriminations. He reminded the participants that ‘educate’ was given the prime importance by Dr. Ambedkar. The pointed out that parable of the talents by Jesus Christ suggests that the reward will be given to those who struggle, put all the efforts, and fight against the odds to double the talents they are given.

The participants thanked the diocesan leadership and the synod for the camp and requested for the follow- up programmes of the same.

Around 230 young Dalits and Adivasis attended this workshop.
